The Emerging Khmer Extractive Industry: Engine of Unsustainable Development?

Sustainable development is taken to mean meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Unsustainable development compromises the land and her riches, and  future generations meet their needs with unpredictable State apparatus.  Local and foreign publicly listed companies, and investors, have arrived from Australia, Canada, China, France, the Republic of Korea, Japan,  Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the USA and Vietnam, to explore Cambodia’s gold, bauxite, silver, lead, copper, zinc, iron ore, granite, coal, nickel, gemstones, zirconium, graphite, tungsten, manganese and rare earths, and to drill for on-shore and off-shore petroleum and natural gas.
