Today we have gathered to celebrate the ninetieth birthday of one of the greatest historians of India, if not the whole world. It is both a solemn and a joyous occasion. There is no point in even sketching the awesome corpus of Professor Irfan Habib’s work. Beginning with his first magnum opus, The Agrarian System of Mughal India, published in 1963, he has given us a steady stream of books and articles, including An Atlas of the Mughal Empire and An Atlas of Ancient Indian History.
