This book is very important for understanding the economic and political history of Bangladesh from its liberation to 1974, and some of the factors leading to the assassination of its liberator, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman had wanted a socialist, secular republic, but in a Bangladesh devastated by the wanton depredation of the Pakistani army, he or his close associates did not have enough time to prepare the ground for such a transition.
