Patriarchy in the Era of Neoliberalism : The Case of India

For some time now India has been much in the news due to the large number of reported (gang) rapes and other violences against women. Especially after the horrific incident of the gang rape of a young woman (alias Nirbhaya – Fearless) in a Delhi bus, which made its way into the world media, the scrutiny has intensified. There is a debate between those who think that incidents of rapes of different kinds and other social violences against women have actually increased in India in the last decades, and others who say that the perception of this increase is dependent upon detailed and frequent reporting.
