Aligarh Muslim University : A Study of the Critical Period of Transition

In the early and middle 1940s, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) assumed a political garb that it had never worn before ¯ a vocal centre for the demand for Pakistan, of which (even in the official League map of Pakistan), Aligarh was not to be a part. Upon freedom, on 15 August 1947, it naturally came to India’s share. There were many ways in which after 1947 India was shaped into a secular democratic state. The way in which the secular project in its most initial stage was implemented can be seen in the treatment that the Aligarh Muslim University received after Independence.
