Marx, the Digital Divide and Hegemony
We live in a globalised and digitised age. Some of us receive news of friends through the internet, transact our purchases through the internet, conduct businesses through the internet, even receive our medicine through the internet. The richest four persons in the world have all come to acquire their enormous wealth by using the internet. Jeff Bezos, reputed to be worth $154 billion at the beginning of 2018; Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Facebook; Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft; Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple – have all come up by using the internet or supplying the machinery for enabling the internet to be used. On the other hand, there are hundreds of millions of people who have neither the literacy nor the minimum income needed for using the internet. The current paper is about this yawning digital divide between the many and the few.
