Editorial Note, Jan-Feb, 2019

We continue our discussion of Gandhi on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary with three more articles on him in the current issue of Social Scientist. Our interest in Gandhi is not a scholastic one; we engage with him as a way of engaging with the present in the history of our country. What marks these three articles and the ones we have published earlier is that they do not discuss Gandhi’s theory and praxis as mere academic issues. Gandhi for them, and us, is not just an object of study; recovering him is a means of struggling against the Hindutva-dominated, hate-filled and impoverishing ambience of today. Recovering Gandhi at present constitutes praxis.
