Obituary: Gail Omvedt, the Indian Left and the Quest for Social Transformation
Noted scholar and activist Gail Omvedt died after a long illness on 25 August 2021 in Kasegaon, Sangli district, Maharashtra, which she had made her home since the 1970s. In its obituary of the noted scholar, the CPI(M) recognised her strong commitment and said that ‘India has lost one of the most important voices of the marginalised sections in the country’. This recognition of Omvedt’s contribution to the larger democratic movement came in spite of her consistent sharp ideological critique of the theory and practice of the Indian Left. Her interrogation was born out of her experience as an activist of the Shramik Mukti Dal, which she founded with her partner, Bharat Patankar, in 1980. Omvedt’s ideological and intellectual support to struggles of the marginalised and ‘new social movements’ often manifested itself in political opposition to the strategies pursued by Communist-led mass organisations. But her consistent honest commitment to a common cause earned her respect, and this is reflected in the obituary statements of Left and democratic movements.
