OBITUARY: In Memoriam – Kavita Singh (1964–2023)
That Kavita Singh (1964–2023) was one of the leading art historians of her generation was never in dispute. Her command over Mughal and Rajput miniatures, illustrated and illuminated manuscripts, scroll-painting, the arts of the book as well as the visual, plastic and fine arts of the Islamicate Deccan, was unparalleled in the contemporary art scholarship, not just in India but worldwide. In addition, she had developed a line of expertise on the methods and politics of museums and other art collections and repositories (including temples and monasteries) in colonial and modern India, that not only reflected her own research interests but also helped establish the field of museum studies in and for South Asia in recent years.
