Editorial Note, September – October, 2025

Marking the birth centenary of one of India’s great filmmakers, this issue carries a piece by Subrata Sinha titled ‘In Search of a Revolutionary Modernism: The Art and Activism of Ritwik Kumar Ghatak’. Starting his professional life as a Communist activist on the cultural front in a period that saw the establishment of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), Ghatak turned to film, which he saw as having evolved from still to moving image and then the talkies, before seeking to move beyond speech to attain a state akin to music.
