OBITUARY : Professor P.C. Joshi

Professor Puran Chand Joshi, the renowned economist and social scientist, passed away on 2 March 2014 after a prolonged illness. He will always be remembered for his contributions as a teacher and researcher to holistic development and agrarian studies. He sought to enlarge the scope of the intensive village investigation programme so that it was not narrowly focused on economic variables alone. A salient feature of his studies was that they also encompassed social, structural and cultural factors, the linkages between the agrarian social structure and the power structure, between class and power, and of socio-economic disparities and educational inequality.
