OBITUARY: Sunil Janah (1918–2012)

Sunil Janah was a man who was always more than his profession, while showing great commitment to his role within it. Having lived through some tumultuous times in the development of India’s polity and the state of its fledgling nationhood, he became one of its finest chroniclers. He was a photographer, an ingenious creative mind and connoisseur of arts, a politi- cal activist and a social campaigner. He wore all these hats effortlessly and was never one at the expense of the other. A man of tremendous conviction and courage, he travelled extensively over the years to remote parts of the country to cover assignments that were no doubt physically and emotionally demanding but handled each with his understated flare and panache.
