OBITUARY: Sunil Kumar (1956–2021)

Professor Sunil Kumar, distinguished historian and teacher, passed away on 17 January 2021 at the age of sixty-four. He had been unwell for some time, but there was nothing to indicate that the end was so near. Sunil Kumar had recently relinquished charge as head of the department of history, University of Delhi, successfully steering the department through a very difficult time.

Sunil was born in Jaunpur, and spent part of his childhood in Lucknow. His father was a senior bureaucrat. Sunil studied for some years at St. Xavier’s School, Delhi. A keen basket-ball player, he made good use of facilities which the school provided for sports. He graduated from St. Stephen’s College; and went on to do his postgraduation from the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut).
