Mumtaz Alam, Health, Medicine and the Encounter of Cultures in India, New Delhi: Primus Books, 2022, xiv+246 pages, Rs 1050.

In the last few decades there has been a plethora of work exploring the history of medicine in India. However, a large number of such works are focused either on India’s ancient past or on the colonial period. Medieval India seldom attracts the attention it deserves. Consequently, except for a few essays, there is a scarcity of substantive full length monographs which elaborately delve into the history of health and medicine in medieval India. The present monograph by Mumtaz Alam attempts to fill this major historiographical gap.
