In the lead article of the current number of Social Scientist Irfan Habib discusses the issue of equality which has recently attracted much attention in the advanced capitalist countries. Thomas Piketty’s best-selling book has
underscored the threat to democracy from the massive and growing inequality in these countries. Even the World Economic Forum at Davos has listed growing inequality as one of the major problems before the world. Underscoring the growing inequality in India (and even China) in the period of high GDP growth, Habib concludes that the ‘battle for equality is far from over’.
