OBITUARY : Ajit Singh

Ajit Singh, Emeritus Professor of Economics at University of Cambridge and a long-time associate of Indian academia, breathed his last in Cambridge on 23 June 2015, in his Newnham home in Cambridge. The news was received with immense sadness by all who knew him in different capacities, not just in terms of his valuable contributions to economics but also as a friendly soul whose generosity knew no bounds.  Ajit, diagnosed with the debilitating Parkinson’s disease early in his life, took up the challenge by being intellectually at his best while struggling with a progressive run-down of his physical abilities, which continued for at least 30 years or more till his last. It was a remarkable balance, of the sufferings in physical terms patiently compensated by cerebral activities which possibly continued to provide him the meaning of life!
