Editorial Note, Nov-Dec, 2018

The country has lost two outstanding historians in the past few weeks. The first to go was Mushirul Hasan, a scholar par excellence of modern India, a fearless author and a great institution-builder who as the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia infused new life into that remarkable institution which had a link with India’s freedom struggle. And we were in press when we heard the sad news of the passing of Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, a retired Professor of the Centre of Historical Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, a former Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati, and a former Chairperson of the Indian Council of Historical Research, whose Financial Foundations of the British Raj remains a classic. We shall discuss the intellectual contributions of these two extraordinary scholars in the next issue of our journal.
