Editorial Note, Mar-Apr, 2019
In the present issue of Social Scientist we continue with our series on Gandhi, on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary, with two more articles on him. The lead article by Gulammmohammed Sheikh, the renowned painter from Baroda, is about his quest for Gandhi, especially in the aftermath of the Gujarat killings of 2002. How to retrieve Gandhi from his busts and statues on street corners, from his images on postage stamps and rupee notes, and to express him through his painting, especially since Gandhi’s own texts are not easily translatable into painting, has been Sheikh’s concern. During his Sahmat lecture on Gandhi, upon which the current article is based, he had shown his effort in this direction through a set of his paintings; we reproduce some of these paintings alongside the text in this article.
